There's so much going on in this second Leader storyline that it's impossible to comment on it all, except that it's David at his best. We get a great two-issue return to Vegas, and a great four-issue return of the Leader, allowing one of the Hulk's greatest foes to also bring this second volume to an end, as if he were ticking off each of the arcs in David's time. In the last half year (issues #395-400), the Hulk even returns to greatness. It's a good new direction for the Hulk, and as unique of a direction as when he was a legbreaker in Vegas. The whole idea of Banner being psychologically damaged was entirely new in the early '90s, and issue #377 was the strong culmination of that plotline, something that might not be as obvious from a generation later.Īs for the new status quo: it's great, not just because we get a smart Hulk, but also because we get the introduction of the Pantheon, a fun group of mythically themed characters operating in semi-secret doing semi-black-ops stuff. ![]() Peter David's second Omnibus starts off as a bit of a meander, but with issue #377, we get to the second big arc of David's time on the Hulk, as Bruce gets psychoanalyzed into reintegrating his personalities, resulting in the smart green Hulk. ![]() ![]() 'Everyone likes a good ghost story.'ĪBOUT THIS BOOK: It’s autumn in Painters Mill, and Chief of Police Kate Burkholder and John Tomasetti are taking a much-needed vacation at a small bed and breakfast an hour outside of town. These daughters are granted some of death’s powers and if they are found, they are taken to a covenant to become an assassin of death to serve his justice. In this world, the god of death, Mortaire, went to the human world and sired many daughters with human mothers from all social classes. “Courting Darkness” takes place in the same world as the “Grave Mercy” trilogy, a bit after the final book. The novel by Robin LaFevers brings realistic historical factors into a genre dominated by the cliché. However “ Courting Darkness” embodies a storyline that includes none of those elements. Elaborate ball gowns, a world of luxury, and a forbidden love story are all elements you’d find in a typical historical fiction book. ![]() ![]() She did not really mind this because she was allowed to use the money-her pupils paid her twenty-five cents a lesson-to fit up a little room for herself upstairs in the half-story. There was a flurry of snow about Thanksgiving, and then December came on warm and clear. The town kept its cheerful summer aspect, the desert glistened with light, the sand hills every day went through magical changes of color. Throughout October the days were bathed in sunlight and the air was clear as crystal. Of Mice and Men also represents an experiment in form, as Steinbeck described his work, "a kind of playable novel, written in novel form but so scened and set that it can be played as it stands." A rarity in American letters, it achieved remarkable success as a novel, a Broadway play, and three acclaimed films. But after they come to work on a ranch in the fertile Salinas Valley of California, their hopes, like "the best laid schemes o' mice an' men," begin to go awry. Clinging to each other in their loneliness and alienation, George and his simple-minded friend Lennie dream, as drifters will, of a place to call their own-a couple of acres and a few pigs, chickens, and rabbits back in Hill Country where land is cheap. The book was adapted by Steinbeck into a three-act play (produced 1937).
